What is multimodal transport ?
Multi modal transport is the transportation of goods via multi modes of Transport often In a shipping container , by Truck from the Factory , then ship to a receiving port and then often depending on factors either onto a truck or a train , (if onto a train a truck/lorry will often do the final few miles ) What is a shipping container ? They are those big metal boxes you often see on trucks They do thou range in size from 20 foot (yes 10 foot ones exist but rare to see them in use in international transport /multimodal transport and that is a containers main purpose ) 30 foot (mainly bulk powder and the likes are in these ) 40 and 45 foot containers ( 1 teu is a 20 foot container (may have heard the term when you see container ships discussed ) Larger containers do exist but they are mainly in use in north America What is a flat rack Container? While most shipping containers are just solid boxes with doors at one end a few other types exist, including Flat racks which are basically a containers version of a flat bed trailer Other Types of containers ? Yes there are several other types beyond the above mentioned 2 as containers where developed in the 1960's to speed handling of goods up in ports As a result various types do exist including Bilk tipper containers (ass mentioned commonly the 30ft type (other sizes are about ) Curtain side containers the same as a box container expect the side is a curtain (like curtain side trailers ) Out of gauge ? this is a term your more likely to come across in most sectors of Transport as it is just simply a term to describe any item been transported who size/s are out side standard and therefore larger than normally transported You also get containers with curtain roofs for tall out of gauge cargo's (for us out of gauge would be anything longer or wider than the van )(and most companies it will be just the same expect larger or wider or longer than what their largest units carry normally)
