What does that mean? Transport terms

What is Git ? (Goods in Transit insurance )
Good in transit insurance is a legal requirement for when your carrying a load for hire and reward, and is an insurance that cover the load (from Theft, damage and fire )
What is Hire and reward ?
Hire and reward is what it is called when your carry a load for payment from a customer
What does Payload mean ?
Payload is the amount of weight a vehicle can carry
And what is Gross weight tonnes ? (GWT)
Gwt is the maximum permitted weight a vehicle can carry this includes the vehicles own empty weight , fuel , drivers, passengers (crew) So if a vehicle is 3.5 tonnes Gwt it may not weigh more than 3.5 tonnes not carry 3.5 tonnes
What is a removal blanket ?
A removal blanket is a blanket made to protect your items in transit from scratches and other similar marks. There are several styles including horse hair blanket and padded blankets (We have both types on our van)
what is Euro 6 ? Euro 1 - 6 is an engine emission spec set by the EU with Euro 6 been the latest
What does Lez mean ? Low emission zone like you have in London and many European countries (in London only affects large vans , buses and lorries ) Other cities with Lez include Paris in France (and many more )
And Ulez ? Ultra low emission zone which is now operating in central London (effects all Vehicles )(as well as various other cities in the UK and many European cities )
What is 500kg? 500 KG = 1102 LBS or 78 3/4 Stones (KG = Kilograms there are 1000 grams to a kilogram )
You may have seen me mention our van has adblue but what is Adblue ? Adblue is a chemical many newer diesel vehicles have (Cars included ) have that helps reduce the Nox emissions of the vehicle (Nitrogen oxide ) so it helps the vehicle cleaner

What can a 3500Kg van carry ? (3.5 ton) Well the 3.5 tonnes is not the vans permitted load it is the vans permitted overall weight so the 3.5 tonnes is what the van can not weigh more than (excluding with a trailer thou with a trailer the van can not it's self weigh more than 3.5 tonnes but can have a train weight of more ) so if the van weighs 2000kg /2 tonnes empty it can carry including the driver, fuel , tools and load a further 1.5 tonnes
What is train weight ? (no it is not in this case to do with Trains ) Train weight refers to the weight of the unit and trailers combing weight
So what is Kerb weight ? it is the weight of a vehicle when fuelled (with oil etc ) and carrying it's equipment so basically what it weighs before you load it
Our very own Paul has his c +e licence but what does that mean ? Well in old money it was what they called Class 1 or an artic so he can drive the largest lorries on he roads
What is Tranship ? Tran-shipment is the transferring of goods between on mode of transit to an other (can Include transfer from on vehicle to an other)
You may have heard of LCL what does it mean ? Less than container load which is away to to say part load in a shipping container (and since I mentioned Containers they come in various sizes like 20 foot (which is 1 TEU (the unit they measure Container ship sizes in (Twenty foot equivalent units)
Cabotage : is the act of a 3rd party haulier carrying a load in country a to within country A (When they are not from country A) (For example we have to record any load we do Spain to Spain on the EU transport portal as Cabotage (and are limited by law to how many you can do in a 7 day [period ) (these loads need declaring on the EU Transport portal )
What is an O licence ?: O licence is an operators licence , and any vehicle with a GWT of over 2500kg doing international work (paid (commercial(yes removals counts) (from the UK to Europe or European countries to European(where borders are crossed ) needs one
The UK issued one they need is a Standard international operators licence (issued by the office of Traffic commissioner ) must be issued by the country the vehicle is from (so Uk plated Uk issued (French plated French etc)
And all Trucks need one (there are 3 types in the UK system (from Restricted up to Standard international )
Hmrc : HM customs and revenue , and they are still involved in the import and export process of the customs , it is for example them who we apply to when doing a Tors and various other parts of the process
UK Border force : are the ones at the border so for example at the port , (we get the T1 form from them )
Dourane : French customs (both the roles of HMRC and Border force to best of my knowledge ) (they have roving patrols in France that can pull you over for inspection even away from the ports (and Dourane vehicles do have blue lights and Sirens )
Fiscal and Frontier ; Is the Division of the Civil guard in Spain who deal with customs and Border control roles (thou not always at airports (that can be the national police ) but it is one their depots for example we go to when in La Jonquera to clear customs
LRN : Local reference number our customs broker sends that number to us and we give it to Border force at the port (if travelling via other locations it can be sometimes at an In land border facility where you do this ) to get our T1
T1 : is a part of the EU union goods transit system and is non union goods transiting from a non Eu location to a final destination in the EU to clear customs (they transit under T1 meaning Duty is not yet paid )(there is a bit more to this but thats a summary )
T2 (union goods ) this is the status that T1 go to when the duties are paid and they are discharged the goods become Union goods and have been legally imported to the EU
(* please note the Union Transit system is just one of the customs systems for this with a few other each designed for a different situation/type of good (by type of good not meaning what they aare but eg if staying in country , if transiting though the EU (eg none EU to none Eu but via EU) if they are temp import etc ( you have things like ata carnet (not going to explain that one here)
MRN: Movement reference number , the load gets this when it is first entered into the customs system and it stays the same on all documents (even where said document may have additional codes etc) to id the load
TORS: Transfer of residency is a HMRC System for tax relief on personal goods entering the UK : *with various rules * read more here
GMR : Goods movement reference , it is a HMRC system all commercial carriers (so hauliers , removals companies etc) must do this when entering and exiting the UK , loaded or empty
